Empowering Traditional Medicine: Aloesha Organic & MGLSD Launch 5-Week Apprenticeship Herbalist Capacity Building Programme Under the GROW Project

KAMPALA, UGANDA — In a major step toward modernizing Uganda’s traditional healthcare and agro-processing sectors, 40 selected women herbalist entrepreneurs gathered at the Aloesha Organic Production Facility on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, for the official orientation launch of the Herbalist Capacity Building Programme.

Implemented under the Generating Growth Opportunities and Productivity for Women Enterprises (GROW) Project in partnership with the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development (MGLSD), this intensive hands-on initiative bridges the gap between traditional herbal knowledge and modern, scientifically verified, legally compliant production.

Transforming Traditional Knowledge into Commercial Success

The primary mission of the program is to equip traditional herbalists with the skills, technical tools, and regulatory knowledge necessary to transition their formulations into standardized, safe, and commercially viable healthcare and cosmetic products.

Over the next five weeks, the 40 participants—representing women-led enterprises from both near and distant districts, including Butambale and Luweero, will undergo rigorous hybrid training combining on-site physical sessions at Aloesha Organic with practical field exercises in their own production units.

High Stakes, High Standards: Strong Stakeholder Support

The orientation session, which ran from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM, was marked by high energy, active participation, and strong multi-stakeholder commitment.

Key Highlights from Day 1:

M&E Oversight: The orientation was attended by the Monitoring & Evaluation team from MAMZA Consults, led by Dr. Bachu Mubarak. Dr. Bachu emphasized the absolute necessity of consistent attendance, active commitment, and the prompt completion of the official Tripartite Agreements to safeguard program quality and impact.
Warm Hospitality: Trainees expressed deep gratitude to the Aloesha Organics host team for their exceptional hospitality, highlighting the quality breakfast and lunch provided throughout the intensive full-day session.
Trainee Dedication: Despite long travel distances from districts like Luweero and Butambala, participants demonstrated overwhelming enthusiasm, signing their commitment declarations and pledging 100% adherence to weekly physical modules and field practicals.

Measuring Performance for Certification

Certification under the Ministry of Gender / GROW Project will be strictly merit-based. Trainees will be continuously evaluated across attendance, practical assignments, laboratory execution, and a final product presentation project:
